THE COMMUTERS

For many years, John and I commuted to work from Marblehead to Cambridge. We were both long time employees of the Polaroid Corporation, John in the Legal Department as a Patent Attorney and myself as a Senior Manager in the Finance Division. For the most part, the trips to Cambridge and back were uneventful, but there were other days of rain, sleet, hail, snow and bilzzards when we were not sure we would even make it to work, or worse, not make it home. Then there was the famous blizzard of '78 when somehow we made it home safely not seeing more than one foot in front of the windshield. John was a true gentleman, choosing not to smoke his pipe in my car, but waiting until we arrived at our destination. It was a different story when he drove his car and I can still smell the smoke. We shared many stories together during our hundreds of commutes and never once had a cross word. My last recollection of John was at Boston's Logan airport in October 2011. My wife and I were on our way to spend the winter at our home in Naples, FL when we bumped into John and Carol heading to San Diego for the winter. I was totally shocked to later learn of his passing that season. During the summer months in Marblehead when I drive by Vassar Road, I remember the many times I picked up John for our commutes and dodging the huge tree growing in the middle of the driveway. Rest in peace John. You will always be remembered as a true friend and gentleman. Irwin & Gladys Kabler
