Life Story for Gladys Evelyn Palast (Kaufman)

Gladys Palast (1921-2018)

Died Monday April 23 at Kaiser Permanente Hospital San Diego. The first woman to enlist in the Coast Guard in Illinois, she will be interred with full military honors at Miramar National Military Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Dr., San Diego, CA, 92122, on Friday, April 27, at 11a.m. along with ashes of her husband, Gil Palast. Gladys was a union activist (SEIU and San Diego Teachers Union), and, until the age of 80, school teacher in Los Angeles then San Diego. A life-long activist for union, education and civil rights, she is survived by her son, author Greg Palast and her daughter, former Assistant Secretary of Labor Geri Palast. Her children and friends will celebrate her life on Friday in San Diego. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to donate to Gladys’ organization, Activist San Diego | Networking for Social Justice.
