Life Story for Jeffrey Jay Shultz

Jeffrey Jay Shultz, Ed.D. passed away peacefully on January 11, 2018 in San Diego, CA. Most recently a resident of La Mesa, he leaves to mourn his soul mate, Norah Peters Shultz, and his beloved daughter, Julia Brown, son-in-law, Alex, and granddaughters, Nina, Hannah and Violet, all of Redlands, CA. He and Norah made the move west to be nearer to “their girls” and to start a new phase of their lives. Though Jeff’s time here in California was short, he loved his new locale.

Born in Arecibo, PR on September 25, 1949, Jeff earned a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a master’s degree and Ed.D. from Harvard University. During his tenure at Arcadia University in Glenside, PA, which began in 1985, Jeff held the rank of a full Professor of Education. He retired in May of 2016 and was honored as a Professor Emeritus. In the words of those who knew him best, Jeff’s educational mission was defined by a deep passion to serve students, a commitment to social justice, and to have a lot of fun along the way. Besides being a brilliant scholar who received many awards, Jeff had a passion for photography and baseball. He and Norah had many wonderful baseball moments, including watching their Phillies win the 2008 World Series.

Jeff was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2002. It was important to him that people knew it was possible to live well with PD. A life might have to be modified but life could still be lived. Norah and Jeff traveled constantly, right up to two weeks before Jeff was hospitalized in the fall.

Jeff is also survived by his siblings, Barbara Stark of Las Vegas, NV, David Shultz (Ann) of Kennebunkport, ME, and Kenneth Shultz of Oakland, CA, brother-in-law Jeff Peters (Dorothy) of Harrisburg, PA, many nieces and nephews, his stepdaughter, Reilly Dempsey Willis (David), and her two children, of Wyndmondham, England, and four important animal companions, Cletis, Sweetie, Smudge and Kiltie.

Jeff’s life will be celebrated at a Memorial Service at Arcadia University, Grey Towers Castle, on March 25th at 12 noon.
