A truly good friend

Mark and I had contact even before he moved to San Diego for the job with MTDB.  While still in Denver at RTD he called a couple of times to discuss some planning procedure, something I'd forgotten about later but true to Mark's mind he remembered all the details of our discussions.

The day Mark reported for work just happened to be the same day as the roast for Bob Robenhymer's retirement.  Actually that was a good introduction as it showed him a-lot about the staff -- professional but fun-loving at the same time.

Having both grown up in the environment of Garrison Keillor's "Lake Wobegon" we shared many of the same values, always a basis for a great friendship.  But there was more; a similar enthusiasm for sports (we both cheered for Navy and against Notre Dame football, and loved sailing, though he was a far better sailor), movies, off-beat humor (we both carried many memories of the old Steve Allen routines), and nearly all things Italian, starting with Alfa Romeos but not ending with Gina Lollobrigida (his favorite) or Sophia Loren (mine).

Mark was a modest man and I suspect many didn't realize the depth of his intellect,   He was a true humanist and cared deeply about the state of society and the environment.  Many times I was amazed by his recollections of serious writings on a wide variety of subjects, be those relating to government, economics, philosophy, technology, or society.  Some references he'd read recently but others many years ago, he retained them all.

Recently he was excited about the prospect of retirement within a couple of years and had narrowed down the place to resettle to three likely locations, one being Denmark where he still held strong family ties.

So it is with great sadness that I say "goodbye" to Mark.  You left me with many fine memories of times we enjoyed together my friend.  My condolences to your family and the many loved ones and friends you left behind.

Tim
