Life Story for Pauline Ethel Forman (Westerinen)

Pauline Ethel Forman (Westerinen)
Pauline Forman, 80, died peacefully on June 25, 2017 of complications stemming from Alzheimer's disease. Pauline took pride in telling people she was brought into this world by a Finnish midwife in a log cabin in the far reaches of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. When she was five, she moved with her parents and two sisters to Detroit where her father found work as an auto mechanic. Pauline grew up in Detroit and excelled through school, graduating at 17 years old as a valedictorian of her high school class of 600 students. She continued her education in Detroit earning both her bachelor's and master's degrees in English at Wayne State University

She was selected to teach at Detroit's most prestigious high school for gifted students. While she was there she met fellow teacher Sidney Forman. They were married in 1962 and relocated to San Diego to continue their teaching careers and to live in the wonderful weather. They had two children, Stuart, born in 1964 and Susannah born in 1969.

Pauline first taught at Crawford High School in the San Diego Unified School District. In 1964 she joined he Grossmont Union High School District as an English teacher at Mount Miguel. While teaching English full time she attended law school in the evening, earning a law degree and passing the California Bar Exam in in her first attempt. After practicing law for three years she decided she missed teaching too much and returned to teaching in 1982 at Helix High School. In 1983 she transferred to Monte Vista High School where in in 2000 she ended her long career in education as a librarian. In the following years she occasionally taught part-time classes at Grossmont College and San Diego City College.

After Sidney died in 2007 Pauline rekindled a relationship with her high school sweetheart Jack Burke and for the last 10 years they have had a wonderful and loving relationship. Pauline is survived by Jack, Stuart, her daughter-in-law Barbara Nash, her Granddaughter Sarah Forman, and her sister Irene Van de Velde

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday June 29th at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego. Further information is available with Am Israel Mortuary 619-583-8850.
