John Bloomberg, the 2014 International Ski Federations (FIS) World Champion senior ski racer and former Wall Street figure died on February 22nd, 2017 in La Jolla, California. The cause was brain cancer his wife Toni, said.
Until recently, John had been an avid, multi medal-winning ski racer, having won the 1st place Gold medal in Park City Utah at the FIS World Championship in 2014 at the age of 78. Other racing awards include the US Masters National Championship in 2001 and 2007 and the NASTAR National Championship in 2002. His passion for skiing extended to serving on the Board of Directors of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA), the national governing body for Olympic skiing and snowboarding in the USA.
After graduating from Amherst College (BS ’57) and Harvard Business School (MBA ’62), Mr. Bloomberg worked on Wall Street as a research analyst and was a partner at Bear Stearns. He covered the health care industry at both Kidder Peabody and Alex Brown & Sons and was on the board of Directors at CBWL Hayden Stone & Ladenburg Thalmann where he was a Director of Research and Senior Vice President. Mr. Bloomberg was a founder of many small companies one being Olympic Growth Fund, an investment company. He was active at Ballard Medical Products in Salt Lake City, Utah which was later sold to Kimberly Clark in 1988. He also founded Bricoleur Partners, a billion-dollar hedge fund in San Diego that sold to Asset Alliance in 1999.
In Addition to his passion for ski racing, Mr. Bloomberg and his wife Toni were passionate art collectors, having built a world class American & Impressionist collection of art that has been displayed in museums around the United States, including the Getty and the San Diego Museum of Art. Several years ago, the Bloomberg’s donated a substantial part of their collection of paintings by early Utah artists to the John A. Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah. Mr. Bloomberg served on the Getty Conservation Council as well as the State of Utah Arts Advisory Board, the University of Utah College of Fine Arts Advisory Board and President’s Club Committee for the University of Utah where Mr. Bloomberg was also an Honorary Alumnus.
Mr. Bloomberg’s philanthropic reach was keenly felt at the John A. Moran Eye Center where he was a major donor and served on the Board of Directors. In the 1990’s Mr. Bloomberg’s vision began rapidly deteriorating, and he was introduced to Dr. Randall J. Olson head of the University of Utah’s Department of Ophthalmology at the John A. Moran Eye Center. In gratitude for the surgery performed by Dr. Olson, that he credited with saving his vision, Mr. Bloomberg and wife, Toni, began generously contributing funds to the Moran Eye Center. The John and Toni Bloomberg Ophthalmology Library at the eye center is named in their honor. Mr. Bloomberg also served on the Department of Ophthalmology Advisory Board, the College of Science Advisory Board and most recently on the Board of Directors of Research to Prevent Blindness.
