Life Story for Morton Jay Golden

Morton Jay Golden
Mort Golden lost his brave battle with Alzheimer’s at the age of 87. Born in Brooklyn, NY. Mort lived a rich and purposeful life based on his love for his family, community and USC football. After moving to Los Angeles he attended the University of Southern California, where he graduated from the the School of Commerce and was president of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity.

Mort enjoyed a long career with the County of Los Angeles, where he served as the County-City Coordinator and then was appointed Chief Deputy Administrator for the Los Angeles County Fire Department where his success led to his being recruited as Deputy Director at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. There he grew the collection and reputation of the museum. A highlight of his tenure there was organizing the renowned 1976 Treasures of Tutankhamun (King Tut) exhibition for which President Anwar Sadat of Egypt awarded him the Republic medal in 1979. Mort was then Director of the Palm Springs Art Museum and also served as the chairman of the California Association of Museums. In 1989, Mort, who was regarded as a leader in the new field of museum management, was lured to Boston to serve first as Deputy Director and then Director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. While there he also taught Art Administration courses at Harvard University. After completing a six-year stint, Mort and his wife Evelyn moved to San Diego to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Mort continued consulting for museums around the world and served as the President of the Men’s Club of Congregation Beth Israel. He is survived by Evelyn, his wife of 60 years, daughters Caron Golden of San Diego and Linda Rivkin of Catalina/Rancho Mirage, and son Dr. Jay Golden of Chapel Hill, N.C., as well as his son-in-law Michael, daughter-in-law Dina and his five grandchildren—Adam, Taylor, Deanna, Samantha and Shea, in whom he instilled his love and dedication to family. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations in Mort’s memory to Alzheimer’s San Diego at www.alzsd.org.
